The theme "Weaving Culture, Enriching Future: Empowering Indigenous Communities as Bedrock of Sustainable Development" reflects the crucial role of indigenous communities in creating a sustainable future. Thru out the centuries, Indigenous peoples have been the keepers of traditional knowledge and ways that is in line with nature and are culturally diverse. Thus, empowering them may mean that we will get hold of there deeply rooted cultural heritage and traditional ecological knowledge to achieve sustainable development.
To empower indigenous communities is to acknowledge and recognize there rights, identities, and contributions. It is about enabling there self-determination and providing development that are inclusive and appreciates there uniqueness. What is more, such a development approach can bring about more locally, as well as globally, beneficial and sustainable solutions.
The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) is the main government organization tasked with promoting the rights and welfare of indigenous peoples in the Philippines. The NCIP recognizes that the indigenous peoples have played a significant role in the preservation of the environment and the promotion of sustanable livelihoods.
